Why Are There So Many
 Different Types of Sofas?

There is a wide range of sofas available today, that much is clear. Our society has really embraced functionality in furniture and making various kinds to suit consumers' many needs and preferences.

There are some who live in small spaces and need a sofa that is compact enough to fit in their living room. Alternatively, there are people with large families who would prefer a large, oversized sectional for their family room. There are folks who prefer their couch to be a second bed and opt for sleeper sofas, while others want a piece of furniture that reclines so they can kick their feet up while they lounge.

Sofas don't just serve functionality needs, they also appeal to style preferences as well.

There are sofas with mid-century clean lines and more ornate sofas indicative of the Victorian era. There are sofas with tufted seat cushions and those with flat cushions. And there are many different types of upholstery: fabric, suede, leather, etc.

What's the Most Popular Type of Sofa?

With all the different types of sofas available, the three-seater remains the most popular modern sofa, worldwide. However, even amidst the traditional three-seaters, there are a number of sofa designs available whether it's aesthetics you're after, functionality, or you just want to be extra comfy.

Different Types of Sofas by Seat and Configuration

Sectional Sofa

Sectional sofas are a popular choice. They are typically broken down into two or three “sections” that connect together to make a whole. While many traditional sectionals are L-shaped with a seat portion and chaise lounge, there are many different styles around to choose from.

Depending on your needs, there are sectionals that include a reclining sofa, or a sleeper sofa, should you have a need. Additionally, there are now customizable sectionals available so you can decide what style of sofa you want for your home by picking and choosing each piece, right down to the seat and back cushions.

Loveseat

The loveseat is another type of sofa, characterized by only two seats, and is smaller than the traditional sofa. There are multiple types of loveseats, including those with and without armrests, and settees, which are bench-style, one seat cushion loveseats. Loveseats of all styles are a fantastic choice for those looking for a sofa that fits well in a small space.

Chaise Lounge

Another sofa style is the chaise lounge. A chaise lounge is a long seat that is meant for people to be able to put their feet up while sitting. Oftentimes, a chaise is included on the side of a sectional or standard sofa. You can get a sofa that attaches on one side to the chaise, giving it a nice L-shape.

Modular Sofas
One of the most popular types of sofas to become available in recent years are modular sofas. Modular sofas come in individual pieces that can be put together to create a whole sofa.

Unlike sectional sofas which typically combine 1 to 3 large pieces, modular sofas come in individual pieces that can be put together in whatever formation you like.

Additionally, because modular sofas are customizable, they are perfect for both big and small spaces because they can be tailored to fit any space you need.

Cabriole Sofa
The Cabriole sofa first became popular in the early 1700s with famous owner, King Louis XV. It is known for having an exposed wooden frame, even-height back and arms, and curved legs. This historical piece of home decor also has a hump on the back, similar to the camelback sofa.
