Every Sofa Style Explained
With all the sofa styles available today, it can get a bit overwhelming to find the perfect option for your living room. We’re going to break down your options — from mid-century to modern designs, from tuxedo sofa, to arm sofa to loveseat —  so you can choose one that best suits your style and home aesthetic.

The Wide World of Sofa Styles

In terms of style, there are many types of sofas available to choose from. There are sectional sofas for a lounging vibe or a family room. There are also the traditional three-seater sofas for the buyer who enjoys a more traditional style.

When it comes to design, there are many to choose from. There are Victorian-era, English style sofas, like the Chesterfield. There are also mid-century modern, art-deco, and contemporary styles available.

To narrow down your selection, we recommend first understanding what your sofa’s function will be, how many people should be able to fit on it, and then narrow down the styles that are most appealing to you.

Types of Sofa Styles

Chesterfield Sofa

The Chesterfield sofa is around 300 years old and is best known for its Victorian styling, which includes button tufting and high, rolled arms that are the same height as the back.

Tuxedo Sofa

Similar to the Chesterfield, a tuxedo sofa’s arms are the same height as the back. However, unlike the Chesterfield, this style of sofa has cleaner lines and is a geometric, buttoned-up piece of furniture, which is where it gets its name.

Mid-Century Modern

The mid-century modern style sofa is characterized by a rectangular shape, straight lines, and a tufted back. It became very popular in the mid 20th century. They usually also have low seating and tapered legs.

Contemporary Sofas

Contemporary style sofas are more representative of present day trends as opposed to traditional designs. Some characteristics include clean lines, low arms, and wooden legs.

Sectional Sofas

Sectional sofas are the modern day, family style sofa, often arriving in multiple pieces or “sections” that must be combined. They include a traditional two to three seat sofa, attached to a chaise to create somewhat of a sofa bed, better suited for lounging with your feet up. You can usually buy sectional sofas in any of the various styles above.

Modular Sofas

Modular sofas include multiple pieces connected together that typically include a chaise lounge, like a sectional sofa. The difference, however, is that modular sofas are extremely customizable. Their configuration can be changed to accommodate the space, making them perfect for small spaces.
